Notes on the
New Search

There are two kinds of newness around here: search style and search type. Though these might sound the same on the face of it, they actually aren't:

Search Style – In the old search style, results were returned separately, one retailer at a time and then sorted and summarised once they had all arrived; in the new search style, results are sorted and displayed dynamically as they arrive.

Search Type – In the old search, there was just one type: DVD; now there are five: DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc, CD and Video Game. As well as a type ("Search for"), searches now also have a scope ("Search within"): for DVD, HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc, the scope is always title; for CD there's also an artist scope; for video games, the scope is the platform (machine) that the game is for, and there are 10 of those. The types of search that are available for a particular retailer are shown when you hover the mouse pointer over the retailer's name in the search form or click the name to go to the retailer-information page; also, when you select a particular type and scope, retailers for which the search is not available will be dimmed. (I have seen them inexplicably not be dimmed in Internet Explorer, so apologies if that happens – but can I perhaps tempt you to use a better browser...?)

This is still effectively still a beta release of the new style of search, which means it should work fine but there might conceivably be the odd little problem. Do let me know if you experience problems. I have tried it on quite a few browsers, shown in the list above. Obviously there are one or two other operating systems, browsers and browser versions out there, so if the search doesn't work on your favourite (nice, modern) browser, e-mail me and I'll see what I can do. Of course, I might need some help testing changes if I can't get the same browser as you!

Finally, since favourite retailers are likely to be the same regardless of what you're buying, your current selection of retailers to search will remain the same for all searches; if I've not got around to implementing the new search (or the retailer doesn't stock the type of disc you're looking for), you just won't get any results for that retailer.
